Rev. Dr. Brian Snyder
Long before deciding to go to seminary The Rev. Dr. Brian Snyder began his service to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in 1995 serving as an English teacher and administrator at a mission school in Cameroon, Africa.
Upon returning to the States, he worked for two years at Stony Point, a church retreat center in the Hudson Valley. In 2002 Brian enrolled at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, where he received several awards for his skillful preaching and met and married his wife, Michelle. Before coming to Bower Hill in August 2010, he served as pastor in Lake Erie Presbytery.
In Lake Erie and while serving here at Bower Hill, Brian continued to hone his preaching skills and in May 2013, he graduated from Colgate Rochester Divinity School with a doctorate in homiletics. His personal and professional interests such as poetry, literature, alternative forms of prayer, studies in the historic Jesus, hiking, kayaking, and local history make frequent appearances in his sermons, but what many people enjoy most about his preaching is his ability to relate Biblical passages to life’s many challenges in the 21st century.
Michelle, an administrator and mental health therapist at Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute, quickly became involved at Bower Hill playing a key role in reviving the Parish Life Committee. Michelle and the committee helped Bower Hill members rediscover the joy of fellowship whether participating in a Saturday Game Night or the Thanksgiving Progressive Dinner. A year later Parish Life was made an official Session Committee and Michelle served a three year term on our governing board.
Avid gardeners, Brian and his “three ladies,” Michelle and their daughters, Chloe and Greta, live on the remains of an old farm in South Fayette Township.
