A Note From Karl Casey On His Journey Toward Ministry

During 2019, I will begin the journey to move, literally, from the back pew up to the pulpit! Through continuing discernment and the guidance of Brian, I have begun the process to become a Commissioned Pastor within the Pittsburgh Presbytery.

What is a Commissioned Pastor? Previously called a Commissioned Ruling Elder, a Commissioned Pastor is a lay minister typically serving small congregations that have insufficient funds to support a full-time ordained pastor. Through the Presbytery, a Commissioned Pastor is equipped to provide the essential leadership for these small congregations, following training which takes approximately two years to complete.

Currently, the Pittsburgh Presbytery is developing updated educational requirements and criteria for its Commissioned Pastor program. To date, I have received the generous endorsement of Bower Hill’s Session to apply to the Presbytery to become an Inquirer. Keith Mason has been assigned to be my Session Liaison Elder and the Commission on Preparation for Ministry has approved my entering into the Inquirer phase. Updates will be provided as I continue through the process.

I have been very blessed to be supported by a faith community which practices the Gospel of love and inclusion. Please keep me in your prayers as I continue on the journey to answer Christ’s call to serve.

Peace, Karl
