Sandi’s Garden is now full of pepper plants, tomatoes, zucchini, swiss chard and beans ready to burst forth and, once again, supply SHIM’s Food Pantry with bountiful fresh organic produce. This year, 150 additional square feet of garden was added to the original fenced-in garden, which means there will be even more contributions of fresh, organic produce to SHIM’s food pantry. It also means more help is needed from members of the congregation than in previous years.
There are many opportunities available for members and their families to be part of this mission project. The good news is that you can work around your busy schedules and still make a valuable contribution. Signing up to water the garden for a week using our rain barrel system doesn’t take much time, but makes a huge difference. Harvesting will begin after fellowship time in July and August. Join us to see how the garden produce is harvested, weighed and readied for delivery. You may even want to volunteer to make a delivery to SHIM, where you can also visit their on-site garden.

All of this doesn’t happen on its own. Each year, Sandi’s Garden provides opportunities for all members of the congregation to participate. Members can help by:
—Donating seed packets of swiss chard, bush beans, pole beans, sweet and hot peppers, zucchini
—Donating sweet and hot pepper plants
—Donating regular or Thai basil plants. Fresh herbs are always welcome at the Food Pantry.
—Signing up to water the garden beds for a week
—Helping to harvest produce
—Volunteering to deliver the produce on Tuesday mornings
We are blessed to be part of a congregation that is committed to the call to serve others in so many ways. Sandi’s Garden provides an opportunity to enjoy the warm sunny days of summer knowing that our little plot of land is part of a wonderful mission.
