Sandi’s Garden, BHCC’s mission project to support SHIM’s Food Pantry’s efforts to provide its clients with organic produce, is entering its fourth year. Each year we have added more beds to the garden, and last year we donated over 450 pounds of swiss chard, hot and sweet peppers, tomatoes, beans, and zucchini. Our hope is to expand again this coming spring to increase our production even further.
Support for the garden has been wonderful: help building beds, replenishing the garden soil and mulch, donating plants and seeds, and watering. We have reached the point where we need to add a couple of garden coordinators. Keith Mason has stepped forward to fill one spot, but we need another person to fill the second spot. Steve Boisvert will continue to be the main coordinator, but a “close encounter of the worst kind” with some black ice this winter has put him out of commission for gardening at the start of the gardening season. While someone who loves gardening would be great, all that is really required is some free time during the week and an understanding of how important our garden is to SHIM’s Food Pantry.
If the spirit moves you and/or you want to learn more about how the garden works in order to make a decision, please contact Steve at church, by phone (412.531.7321), or email (firstname.lastname@example.org). You’ll be more than glad you did.
