About The Event
March 16--I promised you at least two kid-friendly films for our Lentflix series. For March 16, we thought an old classic might hit the spot. This movie is the story of a young widow trying to make ends meet on a Texas farm during the Depression. It deals with themes of grief, race, community, resilience, and adaptability. Its closing scene, which takes place in a church, is poignant and surprising.
Although I had never seen our second Lentflix movie--Places in the Heart--I had it on good authority that the film was kid-friendly. Also, it is rated PG. However, upon viewing it, I must warn parents that the movie depicts life in Depression-era Texas... That's to say, there is frequent use of the N-word. Racial inequalities are openly portrayed. One person dies by gunshot early in the film, and another is lynched. Nothing graphic is shown, but the bodies are.
I apologize for this oversight. It is definitely a very good film that does not seek to shock, but which only shows life as it was in a certain time and place. This might make for a good discussion with children? In any case, please be warned.
This week, let's watch...
