Ponderings from the Parish Associate - March 2024

Lions and Lambs? Remember that old saying that told us that March would come in like one and go out like the other? As our climate has changed, this mystery has only grown. In the past, we know that some of the wildest snowy days have occurred in March. Perhaps in this month that is to transition us into spring, the message is to be prepared for almost anything.

There are Biblical references to both animals. To the Lion there is the anticipation that in the new day it will be tamed so as a child can lay down beside it. To me that provides the hope that someday the violence that we encounter will be lessened and we can experience a new day of peace. The image of the Lamb is that of gentle innocence that must be cared for and always led to safety. In this post pandemic world, the mission of the church has not changed, but the manner in which it is accomplished has undergone radical new understandings. If we are to have hope, we must be willing to lead God’s people with both the ferocious temperament of a Lion and the gentleness of a Lamb.
